Ego stroking, personality clashing politics, and fighting over scraps are one thing. But constantly having to make "appearances" at the most eye-gougingly awful excuses for dance concerts is just taking too much of a toll on me. Successful professional dancers are given these opportunities to make work, given good dancers, costume designer, and free rehearsal space... I suspect some of them are even paid... and for what? Eternally long minutes of visual horse-shit. They are undeveloped, uninteresting, and in no way thought out. Despite the endless parade of unmitigated crap, I can't make a piece that satisfies these "important" people. I am tired of stroking their egos, and brown-nosing. Frankly, I am just tired. People don't understand dance, they have no background in it, they don't even like it. We have cheapened our art by bribing audiences to come with free dinner entrées and prizes. And the ones crass enough to take the bait wouldn't know good art if it bit them in the ass.<br /><br />So what is the point? Why make dances at all? It takes time, effort, and money. It makes no money, and after all the hours of hard work, nobody sees it... for the few fleeting moments that it actually exists. So why am I torturing myself? Maybe there isn't a point to it at all. Maybe dance really is just dying out. The bad dance I see is no longer inspiring me to do better, it just discourages. And actually, the time wasn't "once upon" but more like the early 17th century. Oliver (though you had best call him "Lord Protector of England") was a very grumpy unhappy sort of fellow. He didn't care for singing or dancing. He didn't like dressing up or going out, and he just hated parties and celebrations of all kind. Mostly, he read the Bible, prayed, and wore lots of black. Oh, and he was power-hungry, bent on obtaining supreme dominance over the entire nation. <p>By 1641, Oliver had made some new somber friends. They also hated having fun, and liked to flap their gums in Parliament. And when this group of grumpy people looked around, they decided everyone else was having far too much fun.</p> <p>So the group of solemn friends -- let's call them Puritans -- became an army. The New Model Army, to be precise. Under Oliver's guidance, this Puritan band managed to defeat the King's army and cut off his head. They dissolved the King's Parliament and tried to establish some of their own. These included The Rump Parliament, The Derriere Parliament, The Roast Beef Parliament, The Slightly-Silly Parliament, and The Oh-Let's-Just-Forget-It Parliament. With the failure of all of these, and nobody left to run the country, Oliver proclaimed himself Lord Protector of the Realm. He backed this up with lots of pointy swords and a few cannons.</p> <p>But Oliver, behing so unhappy and unpleasant, was not a very jolly ruler. He shut down the theaters. He stopped all forms of merriment. He even banned Christmas carols and Christmas puddings. People were only allowed to read the Bible and occasionally indulge in a little penitent flagellation. In fact, Oliver was so unpleasant, that he even beat the crap out of a lot of Irishmen in his free time.</p> <p>Eventually, Oliver died. His Puritan friends were very sad, but everyone else rejoiced. In fact, Everyone was so tired of the Puritans they couldn't stand it. So, Everyone gave the Puritans a boat and bid them a fond "See you in hell!"</p> <p>Luckily for the Puritans, they had some Separatist family members to crash in on. You see, some years earlier (about 1621) a lot of their Puritan cousins, and maybe a weird uncle or two, got on a big boat called The Mayflower and left England because it was so full of vice and sin. After much sea-sickness and the occasional outbreak of scurvy, the Puritans (both generations of them) arrived in the new American colonies. Here, they were free to practice their strict faith, while raping and pillaging the land of the Natives.</p> <p>Yes, despite the offered olive branch...er...peace pipe...Bong of Friendship... the Puritans just used the Native Americans and then dropped them like a two-penny whore. As it turned out, this was just the beginning of the many lies and deceitful actions which the American Government was going to apportion the Natives.</p> <p>And this is why we kill massive numbers of turkeys (even though we don't really like them as much as chickens or cows) indulge ourselves in an orgy of gorging (which the Puritans would have pistol-whipped us for) and watch big rubber balloons being carried through the streets of New York each Thanksgiving.</p> <p>Actually, it's a pretty lame excuse for a holiday. Basically, it's just the pre-game show for the <i>main</i> event:</p> <center><b><i><span style="color:#990000;">The</span></i></b> <b><i><span style="color:#006600;">Commercialized</span></i></b> <b><i><span style="color:#990000;">Christmas</span></i></b> <b><i><span style="color:#006600;">Extravaganza</span></i></b><span style="color:#990000;">!</span></center> <p>Yes, we are all willing to observe the birth of Jesus Christ, just not any of the laws He set down. As one of our Nation's fathers, Ben Franklin, once said, "'Tis easier to keep holidays than Commandments." And let's forget about everyone else and their religious holidays. Clearly tolerance is not part of the foundation of our country. What is that about? I mean, why on earth would vertically challenged individuals actually call <i>themselves</i> "munchkins"? Surely, this is a term that can only be applied to a race that is vertically short IN COMPARISON to a taller race. If they had no contact with taller peoples, why would they call themselves "short"? They are not short! They are a perfectly acceptable size. <br /><br />AND, assuming they did know about taller races (witches and things) why would they use such a derogatory term to describe their own civilization? The year is 1789. The day is July 14. The hour is close on 3 in the afternoon. The weather is hot but partially cloudy, highs reaching the mid to upper 90s. A seething mob of poor, ignorant, and under-nourished peasants crowd the ancient gates. Like flies to a rotting carcass, they swarm around the fortress of God and King, towering above them. Thirty-two <i>Salis-Samade</i> under Captain Deflue are certainly no match for the siege. A small mob attack, perhaps. But not this. For the first time, Le Marquis de Launay fears for his comfortable and well-sheltered life. The rabble will not be put down. They will not suffer under the seeming tyranny of an oppressive and overbearing government any longer!<br /><br />A huge throng of the French National Guard now give up their posts to join the mob. Their numbers reach into the hundreds. The crowd is egged on by Pierre-Augustin Hulin, the Queen's laundry director. They are egged on by starvation. They are egged on by the rumors of government attack. They succeed in breaking into the arsenal and first courtyard. They hotly demand that the bridges be lowered. They are refused! De Launay sends a message to Hulin, threatening to blow the Bastille and everyone within its massive walls to Kingdom Come. A mere 20,000 pounds of gun-powder should do. The rabble shall not back down. There are prisoners within these walls, held captive by a tyrannical power! <i>Mon Dieu</i>, 7 whole men! 7 prisoners! Oh, the torment of it all! The vicious brutality! And one of them is a mad Irishman who cries to these people, his Roman subjects, to save him, their Caesar! No! They will not let DeWhitt perish here. Nor Jean de la Corrége, or the Count of Solages! Neither shall Bernard Laroche or Tavernier spend their days in the dank cells of this fortress prison! They must be free, and De Launay must be punished!<br /><br />At last, the bridges are lowered. De Launay and his handful of men surrender to the chaotic crowd. But this is not a merciful time. The soldiers are paraded through the streets, captives of the Mob. But this is not enough. De Launay and many of the others must lose their heads! Brutally severed off and placed on pikes, they march through the Parisian streets with their ghastly trophy. This is victory! Let this be the just reward for tyrants and oppressors! Let this be a sign to the extravagant monarch. The crowd finds its way to the Hotel de Ville, next stop, Versailles! <i>A bàs les aristos!</i><br /><br />La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt rushes in breathlessly to inform His Majesty. <br /><br />"Is this a revolt?" Louis asks. <br /><br />"No, Sire, it is a Revolution."<br /><br />All this leads me to ask… WHAT in the hell is it with Revolutions and the month of July? The heat? What? Were their buckled shoes too tight? Their trousers too short? Their wigs too stifling? WHAT? First the Americans, now the French. What next? The Canadians??
